Farmers would not pay 1 claim after 40 years

In February of 2005 I took a trip and when I got home several items were missing from my garage located behind the main house, there is one driveway past the main house of the 5 acre property is fenced with a gate next to the main house, the second house is behind the garage twards the back of the property that was occupied, the main big door of the garage was closed the entry door was open enough for the family cat to pass thrugh and I stated the entry door was open for the cat and FARMERS refused to pay because the door was not locked after 40 years without a claim. In DEC. of 05 I sold the houses and property and canceled the Insurance and left. the State, Today 8-4-2006 I recieved a bill from FARMERS for $264.70 for the Insurance on the back house that I assume was not canceled and no refund was paid whuch was easy for me to overlook in the confusion of my moveing out of state.

Send a registered letter to your prior agent requesting cancellation of your policy as of the date you sold the property. Include some legal documentation to prove your claim. He will probably complain about it being too old but an excellent response would be to ask why he was negligent in inquiring about it when he knew the primary homeowners policy cancelled and your forwarding address was out of state?

In regards to your claim, please closely examine your old policy. Look for any wording that requires doors to be closed and locked for theft claims to be paid. If you fail to find such wording, a complaint letter to your prior state Insurance Department would be in order. It may not get your claim paid, but it will be on record as a bona fide complaint and you will have the power and authority of the DOI behind you as the consumer. Some insurance companies are like cockroaches and rats, they really hate being held in the spotlight.
