Roof claim denied in CA

Roof claim denied in CA

I live in San Diego, CA. In April 2020, severe storms and rains caused our roof leaking. The leak damaged the interior ceiling and drywall as well. I submitted a claim to Farmers; an adjuster Ajdin Hamzagic was assigned. The roof was inspected by a licensed roofer and his report was very detailed in explaining that this was not a long term issue. Both the report and the photos were submitted to Farmers. Ajdin evaluated the case and told me that Farmers insurance will NOT cover the roof repair because it is not a storm damage (but rather wear and tear). I asked him what constitutes roof damage due to storm/rain. He said storm damage roof has to be something the storm or wind tear/cut through the underlayment of the roof (blow off the shingles and causing leaks is not). I asked for his supervisor Brian Peterson, who told me the same thing.

This whole insurance thing is very unfair to customers. Farmers will come up with every excuse not to cover the loss. Every year they keep increasing the insurance premium.

I’m looking for a new insurer for my home and I will never ever buy a Farmers policy again in my life.

it appears you do have a case of maintenance and not sudden damage from a storm. The policy is not a savings account that you get to claim items on and then expect to get paid due to your policy premiums for however long. You have to have storm damage, not wear and tear, to collect the funds. it is very clear in the policy and all policies.

All insurance companies will tell you the same thing it's from wear and tear. You can't get insurance money if you don't have a real claim. I've been in insurance for a long time and it's true when they say, "storm or wind tear/cut through the underlayment of the roof." Redman is correct it sounds like you have not done maintenance on the house and the damage is not from a storm.
