I'm a former underwriter with farmers and their biggest issue in my opinion is we have some seriously inept agents. While the claims and underwriting departments have been trying to make changes especially in customer service and prompt payments their progress to improving our image is being undermined by our agents. One prime example is Mr. Olsen based in Colorado. He under insures many people and it is often devestating in a large loss situation and he makes coverage decisions when he hasn't even observed a loss. This sets expectations for people who file a claim before they know the whether or not insurance will truely cover a particular type of loss, which reflects very badly when the decision does not go his way. It is a fact he and other agents create such a bad impression for the company it will be hard for the rest of us working behind the scenes to make up for it until they put some stricter guidelines on coverage administration and the protocol agents should follow when dealing with a insured with a new claim.

There are a lot of bad agents, sure, but it is the claims department that is typically the bad guy (or gal) in most complaints. Yes, I was an agent, and I always gave my customers the most coverage they could afford. Why? One, if there was an accident, the were covered to the hilt, and two, it raised my commision!!!

Lack of training. My training in the fieldunderwriting process was all on SALES. I really had very little underwriting training. So the agents being inept has alot to do with what is taught and trained. Sales, marketing, presentation, hell that is the basis of career school. Never once was underwriting, rules, regulations touche on

Agent Lover?
I think not! All you want to do is sit in your high & mighty underwriting tower and cast insults towards the agents how dare you!

I think you forgot who was paying your salary, retirement, profit bonuses, etc. It was the agents!! If we don't sell policies the company doesn't earn revenue and you don't get paid! Get it! So you should thank your lucky stars that the "inept" agents are selling otherwise we wouldn't have needed you! You ungrateful, inept former(thank god) employee!!!! Why don't you get some guts and try to become an agent and let's see how successful you are smart guy!
